I become increasingly more troubled and concerned as I see and hear the turbulent unrest unfolding in our nation and our world. I love America. She is my home, and yet she looks ever more unfamiliar to me as the days, weeks, and months pass by. Engrained in my heart is the definition of America as the land of the free and the home of the brave. Free and brave…I don’t know about you, but intuitively there are qualities and characteristics underlying these two words that seem to be dissolving beneath our feet in our homeland. Notions of honesty, integrity, genuine care, and love worth fighting for, all of these are intrinsically tied in with the conceptualizations I have of these words, especially when they are joined.
Listening and watching all of the noisome speech surrounding sequestration has heightened my senses toward the gross lack of integrity and genuine love for our nation, our people. I watched as our president spun his web of deception veiling the eyes of the uninformed. Sequestration was his creation as a means of lording power over others to get his way. That is how I define bullying. I’ve never respected a bully and have suffered along with many others on the receiving end of their unruly and powerful impositions. And always, when caught, they blame the object of their scorn instead of taking responsibility and owning personal accountablility. It all goes together and is rooted in a gross lack of integrity. There is nothing more difficult to deal with than a person who lacks integrity. Their own power and position directs their every move so they are bound by no sense of accountability, their consciences have been seared as with a hot iron and they continue their pursuits without remorse.
As I watch in great wonder as our nation is led further and further into financial captivity, I am reminded of the source, the root, of our great problem. Proverbs 9:10 lays the foundational principle upon which all others must be built if a nation is to stand the test of time. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” Those who fear God and seek Him, who live by His precepts and according to His law of love will never seek to lead by lording over others. They will never seek to rule through manipulative means and unsound principles. They will not be ruled by their own thirst and quest for power because they will have a proper understanding of who they are, of their proper position and God-ordained purpose.
Without having an understanding and reverence for who God is, it is impossible for any person to have an accurate understanding of who he/she is. All is to be understood in light of this foundational truth or there is nowhere for the path to lead other than toward destruction. We are seeing it now…it all began with a denying of God, with a turning away from Him, with exaltation of man (the created) above God, our creator.
May we endeavor fervently to turn our nation back to truth and righteousness! We must be strong and faithful. We must speak truth that is unpopular and endure with grace the hostile rejections that will no doubt be encountered. We must seek wisdom above all else and then share it unceasingly until our Lord calls us home to be with Him. I truly believe “well done my good and faithful servant” will only be heard by those who are willing to suffer for the sake of righteousness. The truest test, I believe, of Love for God above all else in America at this point in time, is our willingness to speak and live the truth of scripture unashamedly and unwaveringly.
We are taught, in the book of James 1:5-6, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.”(emphasis mine) There is but one place to find wisdom. It is a gift received only by those who seek God with their whole heart, mind, and strength. There is something so profoundly wonderful about the gifts given to us from the hand of God. No man can ever take from us what God Himself has given. No government, no ruler, no seat of authority has power to compare with the authority of God.
May we seek a treasure incorruptable and rejoice in the truth! Depths and riches reside with God and apart from Him all else is shallow, has little to offer and will soon dry up.
My heart is heavy for those who operate in deception for their eyes, too, have been dimmed and their hearts darkened. I desire for all of them to see truth, surrender to it, and follow the path of light and love. Satan is using every agent of division he can find to further tear apart those who together could do great good. The only defense we have against evil is truth and love. May we find it and hold to it with an unrelenting grip!
