Before the light of day…

Time seems to pass most slowly in the long hours preceding the first rays of sunshine that parts the darkness revealing the morning sky. 15 minutes so early seems to equal an hour of time that follows once the world is awake.

I love the soft glow of the candles and lamps, and this time of year, the colors of Christmas lights that twinkle from the tree.

My mind is drawn to the many gifts and blessings of life, home, and family and to the needs that I daily take to the Lord. This morning I woke to find quickly the scriptures from Psalms rolling through my mind. “…teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12). I’ve made these words of scripture a prayer many times for my children, myself, and my husband. Such a good reminder of what matters most…seeking and finding wisdom that is only found in God, His Son, and His Word.

As I went to my Bible to find the passage that was on my mind, I read more from that same Psalm and found more encouragement and comfort. “O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.” (Psam 90:14) If we do not find contentment in the mercies of God in this life, we will never find contentment at all for His mercies are rich and true, unfailing and complete. Nothing this world can offer us affords the unfailing, unshakable foundation found in the loving and sure mercies of The Lord.

And before I came to the end of this one Psalm my eyes found these sweet and precious words that I hold ever dear as comfort in the stormy life we find ourselves a part of in this world. “He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust. His truth shall be thy shield and buckler…Because [you] have set [your] love upon Me, therefore will I deliver [you]. I will set [you] upon high, because [you] have known My Name. [You] shall call upon Me, and I will answer [you]: I will be with [you] in trouble; I will deliver [you], and honor [you]. With long life will I satisfy [you], and show [you] my salvation.” (PSalm 90:4, 14-16)

As I was writing these words I share here, another scripture came that is pertinent to add. Ephesians 1:3-6 explains to us how we came to find this favor wherein we rest in the loving Hands of the Lord. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. According as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will. To the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the beloved.”

“Accepted in the beloved,” what a beautiful and wondrous gift we have been given! When I cast my eyes upon these words and the truth of the message resonates in my heart, I find thanksgiving and humility rising from the deep places within.

Let us wake to enjoy the quiet stillness of the day’s beginning and find our hearts and minds settling into the glorious truth of this blessed season with overflowing gratitude.
