Two scriptures are on my mind and heart this morning as my heart aches for righteousness and truth to abound in our hearts and lives. Ephesians 4:29-32 says “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” Galatians 6:7 tells us “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
The strong words are clear and direct and make known to us how to speak, what kind of heart attitude we are to have if the Holy Spirit is in us, IF we are indeed “in Christ.” If a person has not received a heart of flesh in place of their old heart of stone and if the Holy Spirit of God has not been poured into their hearts, then they are dead in their sins, without hope in Christ. If we are not sorry for our sin and ashamed, we can be sure that the Holy Spirit of our Righteous Lord is not indwelling our hearts. Sin, in the life of a believer, grieves the Holy Spirit of God that is within us and the undeniable presence of His righteousness and our sin brings conviction. Oh how I long to know truth, to be as the scripture says we are to be, “a lover of truth.” God is gracious and merciful, He is also righteous, holy, and just.
People often cringe at talk of sin. They like to think that grace erases our need to focus on sin, but redemption and grace are the remedy for sin. Grace was not given so that we could go about our lives unconcerned with our words and deeds, it was given to break the chains of sin that held us in bondage and to give us a new and abundant life in Christ. The old is to be put away and the new, defined by purpose, goodness, and truth is to be put on and we are to walk a new walk hand in hand with Jesus. Yes, that means there is much in this world that we MUST shun. We are not to look like the world, walk like the world, talk like the world, or live like the world. We are to be new creatures in Christ, up and about the business of His Kindgom work. Our lives are to be lived with an eternal perspective.
The fruitlessness of the common pursuit of many is staggering. What lasting good or profit can possibly be found in the trash heap of regular entertainment sought in this world. How many hours are spent, wasted, forever lost to meaningless, mindless viewing, reading, talking? How sad….how grievously sad, when the King of all ages beckons us to a life well-spent abiding in Him.
There is no peace apart from the Savior. There is no joy to be found anywhere else. May we all find our way to the cross and examine our hearts and minds in truth, make all necessary amends to the Lord and surrender to His ways and His Sovereignty over our lives and over all things.
To Him be glory and honor always.
