“Blest be the ties that bind our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. Before our Father’s throne, we pour our ardent prayers; Our fears our hopes our aims are one, our comforts and our cares. We share our mutual woes, Our mutual burdens bear; And often for each other flows, The sympathizing tear. When we a sunder part, it gives us inward pain; But we shall still be joined in heart and hope to meet again!”
So many thoughts in my hurting heart and mind this morning. As I reflect on conversations gone wrong and hurtful misunderstandings, I recognize the abundant blessing we have in our relationship with the Lord who never misunderstands our heart’s intent. He knows all things. He reads our hearts and knows our desires and thoughts before we speak them. His Holy Spirit makes utterance for us when we find there are no words to convey the depths of our longings and the desperate needs of our hearts. How precious and perfect are the provisions of the Lord!
I recognize to, as I reflect on Holy Communion and the awesome wonder of the gifts and blessings of grace, how the Lord built in strength for us by forming the bonds of love only shared by those who are in Christ. The world has no idea of the love and the profound union we have with like-minded others. Our burdens are one, our desires are for truth and honor. We seek the Lord and understand His Will as divine and He as Sovereign. We are His workmanship created in Christ unto good works, yet we recognize our complete and utter dependence on Him for fulfilling that to which He has called us. There is never any room for pride or boasting of any good work we may be blessed to accomplish because we know that it is only by His Spirit that we are ever able to serve anyone or anything other than our own flesh. What a departure from worldly wisdom we make when we see truth from a biblical perspective.
I was thinking how unworthy I am in my own flesh to take part in communion, yet that is true of every human being. It is only by the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross that I can come before Holy God with a clear conscience. Oh, that He would love me enough to be my Kinsman Redeemer! If not for Him, I would be hopelessly and eternally lost. I am saved by His Grace alone and for that I live daily with a heart truly full of gratitude and longing for all to know Him in this way; so that their joy, too may be full!
Until I studied His Word I did not understand Him in the way I now hold dear. I believed in Him, but I did not know the great and wonderful truth that I now carry with me and live in awe of in my daily walk. It has literally changed everything for me, and I want everyone to know Him so personally. There is nothing that will compare, but it requires discipline and longing. We must long for Him enough to make room and time for Him or we won’t find Him. Jeremiah 29:13 says “And ye shall seek me and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
We work so hard to find time for our friends, our family, recreation, rest, and fun, yet do we forsake the One who gives us life? Do we think on HIm and His ways or do we distract ourselves and fill our time with the temporal and tangible? It seems so simple to me to understand that the God of the universe would require being first in our lives. After all, who are we that He is even mindful of us? (Psalm 8:4) How many of us would pass up an opportunity to meet with Kings and Princes of this world, yet daily pass up opportunity to spend time alone with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords? Oh don’t we ever choose foolishly if not careful “to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” Psalm 90:12.
May we remember this day that we are not alone; we are blessed to have the Holy Spirit within us and our family in Christ walking with us on a journey with a sure and certain destination.
